LOCATION & ACCESSIBILITY

Calvin Park is located in Kingston’s midtown area, between the city’s downtown core and its west-end commercial districts. Its central location allows residents to easily access many of Kingston’s key destinations within minutes. Queen’s University, downtown shops and restaurants, and the waterfront are all just a short drive away, while major arterial roads connect the neighbourhood to other parts of the city.

Public transportation is also readily available, making commuting convenient for those who work or study downtown or at nearby institutions. The neighbourhood’s proximity to St. Lawrence College and Queen’s University also contributes to its diverse mix of residents, including students, faculty, and young professionals.

history & development

The Calvin Park neighbourhood developed largely during the post-war expansion of Kingston in the 1950s and early 1960s. During this period, government housing initiatives supported the creation of several new suburban subdivisions to accommodate the city’s growing population. Calvin Park and nearby Polson Park were part of this development, with approximately 600 residential lots created between 1954 and 1962.

Many of the homes built during this era remain today, giving the neighbourhood a cohesive architectural character that includes mid-century bungalows, split-level homes, and traditional family houses on mature lots.

Housing & neighbourhood

Calvin Park is primarily a residential neighbourhood featuring a mix of detached homes, townhouses, and low-rise apartment buildings. The neighbourhood was originally designed with families in mind, and many of its streets include cul-de-sacs and curved roadways that help reduce through traffic and create a quieter, more relaxed environment.

Tree-lined streets, established landscaping, and generous lot sizes contribute to the neighbourhood’s welcoming atmosphere. While many homes date back several decades, ongoing renovations and redevelopment have brought updated interiors and modern amenities to many properties.

The area also has a notable rental population, with renters making up a majority of residents in some parts of the neighbourhood. This mix of homeowners and renters helps create a dynamic community with a range of housing options for different lifestyles and budgets

Calvin Park is home to a diverse population of approximately 3,600 residents. The neighbourhood has a slightly younger median age compared to the city average, reflecting the presence of students and young families in the area.
